Selecting an oncologist

Oncologists practice in different settings: academic institutions such as university hospitals, research institutes such as designated cancer centers, and community doctors' offices. In general, important things to look for when selecting an oncologist and treatment facility include:

An oncologist who has experience in treating this specific type of cancer

A facility that conducts research, particularly clinical trials

An oncologist who is either an ASCO member or active member in another professional society dedicated to continuing education and professional development in the field of clinical oncology

An oncologist with both technical skill and compassion
